There are several different mountain bike "styles" available.   Depending on the type of your riding you'll be doing and the kind of terrain you'll be traversing.  Consider the following:  Will the terrain be smooth, rocky, sandy, or concrete?  If you're a woman, you have the choice of buying a bike designed specifically for the female gender.

If you have the bucks, buy a "full suspension" bike.  They are more comfortable to ride, but a bit heavier.  Full suspension bikes give you better overall control.  If you have friends with bikes, take a test drive.  Generally speaking, If you're hardcore, buy a hardtail style, they are lighter and pedal more efficiently.

Ultimately, realize that a mountain bike is for fun and exercise.  Have fun, stay safe, and use the sport to bond with your friends, children and family.

Necessary Bike Accessories:
This is kind of misleading.  There are no "necessary" bike accessories except the bike itself.  Beyond that, it's about what makes you feel safe and comfortable.  Consider the following accessories for your safety and comfort:
. Bike Helmets - So you're brain doesn't get exposed when you take a spill.  If you have really good reflexes, you can cover your face with your palms.
. Bike Gloves - To protect your hands in case of a crash.  Some people have been known to use duct tape.
. Bike Shorts - Tight fitting bike shorts look cool..I guess.  If you don't have the legs, stick to slim fitting sweats or board shorts.
. Bike Shoes - Designed to be light and aerodynamic.  Fits more snugly into your bike pedal straps too.
. Eye Glasses or Goggles - To keep the bugs and particles out of your eyes.
. Hydration Systems - Something to keep you hydrated (something you can drink out of) while riding your bike.
. Trail Repair Kits. - To save you after a flat tire.
